Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication will begin offering a bachelor of arts degree in Sports Media and Communication. The new major was approved by the state’s Board of Regents at its April 26 meeting.
These awards, which were established in collaboration with the Greenlee School Advisory Council, provide avenues for mid- and early-career recognition of Greenlee School alumni. They build upon the school’s longstanding James W. Schwartz Award, the highest award conferred by the school that has traditionally served as a lifetime achievement recognition, and mirror university and college awards for similar achievements.
Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication alumnus Terry Anderson has died at the age of 76. A 1974 graduate of Iowa State University and a former reporter for the Iowa State Daily, Anderson was abducted in Lebanon while working as an Associated Press correspondent in 1985 and held captive for seven years.

Richard Mensah Adonu, a graduate student in journalism and mass communication, spoke at the 2023 Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden, last September. Adonu presented his academic paper “Investigative Journalism in The New Age: Examining the Use of AI Tools in Investigative Journalism Practices in Ghana.”
Mike Gillis, head writer of the satirical site The Onion, plans to bring humor to a discussion of law, comedy and how the First Amendment is essential to his work in his upcoming lecture at Iowa State. Gillis’ lecture—The Onion: Comedy, Controversy and the First Amendment—will be held in the Memorial Union Sun Room on April 17 at 7 p.m.
Videographer and multimedia storyteller, Jairus Davis, will speak about video production at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication’s 2024 Futures Forum at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in the Memorial Union’s Pioneer Room (3560).
