Lauren Soth (1932) wrote for the Des Moines Register for 28 years, 21 of them as editorial page editor. In 1955, Soth won a Pulitzer Prize for an editorial inviting Soviet premier Nikita Khruschev to visit Iowa. Khruschev accepted the offer and the historic visit led to an ongoing relationship between Iowa and Russia. After retiring from the Register, Soth wrote a weekly syndicated column and is the author of An Embarrassment of Plenty, Farm Trouble and other books on agricultural policy.
