James W. Schwartz Award

The James W. Schwartz Award is the highest honor conferred by the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication. It is awarded in honor of James Schwartz (1941), former department chair of the school who also served as president of the Association for Education in Journalism.

One award is granted annually. The school’s Advisory Council and faculty nominate candidates, and faculty and staff members select the winner.

Greenlee Professional Achievement Award

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication Professional Achievement Award recognizes a Greenlee School graduate who has demonstrated leadership, impact and achievement in advertising, journalism and mass communication and/or public relations. This award serves as a “mid-career” recognition of excellence within their field.

One award is granted annually. Current members of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication faculty/staff, advisory council and awards committee are ineligible to receive this award. Nominate a Greenlee School alumnus/a for this award.


Greenlee Young Alumni Award

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication Young Alumni Award recognizes a Greenlee School graduate under 40 years of age or with fewer than 15 years of professional experience who has demonstrated excellence within their field. This award serves as an “early career” recognition of excellence in advertising, journalism and mass communication or public relations.

One award is granted annually. Current members of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication faculty/staff, advisory council and awards committee are ineligible to receive this award. Nominate a Greenlee School alumnus/a for this award.


Hugh S. Sidey Award in Print Journalism

The Hugh S. Sidey Scholarship in Print Journalism at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication was established in 2006 at Hugh Sidey’s alma mater, Iowa State University, by the White House Historical Association and Mr. David M. Rubenstein. To keep alive Sidey’s legacy of reporting on the presidency, the scholarship supports aspiring print journalists at the Greenlee School. Undergraduate students who exhibit extraordinary understanding of the responsibilities of covering the chief executive and the core principle of social responsibility that resides with the print journalist will be identified for this award.

Kappa Tau Alpha and Greenlee School Diversity & Inclusion Award

Established in 2017, this award is presented annually to a professional journalist and a Greenlee student to recognize their excellence in journalism and promotion of a just and inclusive society through ethical storytelling that broadens people’s understanding of diverse lives and communities. Kappa Tau Alpha is an honor society for students studying journalism and mass communication. Iowa State’s chapter was founded in 1986.

Harry Heath/Lou Thompson, Jr. Advising Award

Established in 2007 by the late Lou Thompson Jr., alumnus and former chair of the Greenlee School’s Advisory Council, in the name of his own adviser, the late Harry Heath, former Iowa State journalism professor and alumnus, this award recognizes faculty advisers and their commitment to: an open-door policy, astute academic advising, practical mentoring and life-changing influence. The award recipient is selected annually by the school’s Student Advisory Board.
