KEYNOTE: KELLEN HENRY, ASSISTANT EDITOR FOR DIGITAL PLATFORMS AT THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Designing for change: How to be fast and fearless when you can’t predict what’s next.”

Henry’s talk will focus primarily on change management. The Times has been developing
processes to help the newsroom move quickly and manage uncertainty in times of great change
for our industry. These strategies for problem solving and innovation should be applicable to
organizations regardless of size/resources and can be applied both at the top of an organization
and by entrepreneurial folks on smaller teams and projects.

In particular, The Times has torn down organizational barriers to create diverse and collaborative
teams that can solve big problems. We’ve invested in understanding our readers’ needs in order
to understand our own unique value to them. And we’ve developed a culture of continuous
testing and experimentation in the newsroom.
