Kevin was with KCCI-TV for 33 years before retiring in late 2015. He joined the station’s production department while still in high school, began sports reporting in 1972 and moved into the news department full-time in 1974 after graduating from Iowa State University. He anchored KCCI’s newscasts since 1982 – after spending two years at KNTV in San Jose, California.
Kevin covered many major events for KCCI, including the historical Central Iowa flood of 1993 and the inaugurations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Kevin interviewed President George H. Bush onboard Air Force One, and he interviewed President Clinton in the White House just hours after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Two of the most memorable stories for Kevin were the returns of hostages Thomas Sutherland and Terry Anderson after their releases in Lebanon in 1993. Anderson was a classmate of Kevin’s at Iowa State, and they also worked together at KRNT early in their careers. Sutherland is an Iowa State alumnus as well.
In 1999, Kevin won the prestigious Jack Shelley Award from the Iowa Broadcast News Association (IBNA) for his outstanding contribution to broadcast journalism in Iowa. In 1994, he received the James Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism from Iowa State University. His wife, Mollie, is also a retired KCCI-TV anchor and reporter.
