Assistant Professor Jan Lauren Boyles had a paper accepted this month for ICA’s preconference on "Data and the Future of Critical Social Research." Boyles is serving (along with Mack Shelley and Joshua Rosenbloom) as co-PI on an NSF grant application, which looks at data-driven decision making and information flows/networks within rural communities. If funded, the five-year project would look at how journalists (and other community actors) translate data from policymakers to non-specialist audiences. In teaching, Boyles will host a training session on data journalism tools for Iowa State Daily students. And in service, Boyles has been invited as a moderator to AEJMC’s Southeast Colloquium. This month, she is reviewing journal articles for Journalism & Mass Communication Educator and Digital Journalism.
