To lead off the celebration of Women’s History Month, Dr. Kelly Winfrey of Iowa State University will present "The Power of Women in Politics" on Thursday, March 1. The 7 p.m. public event will be held in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium at the Ames Public Library.
The lecture is the second event focusing on women and politics co-sponsored by the collaboration of the AAUW Ames, the Ames Public Library, the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University and the League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County. There will be opportunity for questions and dialogue following the presentation.
Winfrey, an Iowa State University assistant professor with the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication and faculty with the Leadership Studies Program of Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, has focused her work in communications with an emphasis on gender. Her upcoming book, Understanding How Women Vote: Gender Identity and Political Choices, uncovers the psychological and sociological reasons for the gender gap in American politics.
Winfrey teaches courses on women and leadership at ISU. In May of 2015 she taught in the Catt Center’s new global leadership study abroad program to Stockholm, Sweden. Winfrey also oversees such research and outreach programs as the Archives of Women’s Political Communication, Women in Iowa Politics database and Ready to Run® Iowa: Campaign Training for Women as part of her appointment with the Catt Center.
