The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University has named Debra Solberg Gibson the recipient of its 2021 James W. Schwartz Award. Gibson will be recognized at the Oct. 1 Greenlee School Advisory Council Meeting and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Honors and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 21.
Colton Boyd, a recent graduate in advertising from Indianola, Iowa, and Lydia Wede, a senior in public relations and international studies from Oakland, Iowa, were named the winners of the 2021 Washington Media Scholars Media Plan Case Competition June 10.
Greenlee Assistant Profesor Andy J. King was awarded a $396,908 grant from the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study communication related to colon cancer screening (CRCS). King will lead a team of researchers from Iowa State, Cornell University and New York University to monitor and evaluate public information and communication disparities about CRCS.

Richard R. Phillips (’78 journalism and mass communication) is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He was recognized April 7, 2021, at the Iowa State University Alumni Association’s 89th Annual Honors and Awards Ceremony, which recognized 2020 honorees.
The late Giles Fowler, associate professor emeritus of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, has been posthumously named a recipient of 2021 Faculty/Staff Inspiration Award by the Iowa State University Alumni Association. Fowler and the other awardees will be recognized Friday, June 4, during a virtual ceremony. Registration closes at noon on June 3.
Madison Tuttle (’18 public relations), a public affairs specialist at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and Karla Walsh (‘10 journalism and kinesiology), a freelance journalist who writes about topics including food, health, fitness and the restaurant industry for national and local media, have been named 2021 Iowa STATEment Makers by the Iowa State University Alumni Association.
Kelly Howard (’08 journalism and mass communication) is the recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from the Iowa State University Alumni Association. Howard was recognized at the 89th Annual Honors and Awards Ceremony, April 7, 2021, which recognized 2020 awardees.
The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication is accepting nominations for its Greenlee Professional Achievement Award and Greenlee Young Alumni Award. Nominations for both awards will be accepted now through Dec. 15, 2021.
