My summer at the Iowa Capital Dispatch sharpened skills I learned at Iowa State and helped me realize the skills I never knew I needed. I spent the summer keeping up with Iowa’s congressional delegates, reporting on the governor’s office, following the presidential campaign trail and more.
This summer, I had the pleasure of working my second social media internship in Omaha, Nebraska. I worked with the marketing and communications department at a company called Lozier, a leader in manufacturing store fixtures.

When selecting the college I would attend, Iowa State University told me to “choose my adventure.” What I didn’t know in 2019 was that choosing my adventure would include being a scholarship recipient and guest at The White House Correspondents’ Dinner!
My name is Harper Snead. I am a junior at Iowa State, studying public relations and communication studies. In March of 2023, I was fortunate enough to volunteer at the March Madness Midwest Regional Tournament during the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight rounds in Kansas City, Missouri.
Six Iowa State students have been selected to participate in the Dotdash Meredith Apprentice Program for the 2023-2024 academic year.
Now in its 20th year, the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication’s partnership with Dotdash Meredith places Iowa State students in year-long apprenticeships at the nation’s largest digital and print publisher.
I am a first generation. This means I was the first born on American soil. The first one to be a part of 82% of first generations to finish high school. The White House Historical Association in partnership with Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication and the White House Correspondents’ Association, have awarded student Cooper Pierce with the Hugh S. Sidey Scholarship in Print Journalism.
Last fall, then first-year students Clare Vilmont, public relations and political science, and Ellie Flynn-Snider, public relations and data science, began the months-long process of competing in the Washington Media Scholars Media Plan Case Competition.
